I have been teaching Middle School FACS for many years. I love what I teach but am constantly looking to update my curriculum and try new things with my students. We often hear about what is going on at the high school level and yet the middle school programs are the feeder programs for the high school. I would love to have a strong network of middle school FACS teachers in Minnesota get together and share ideas. Any thoughts?

Budget cuts and career loss
There is a continued concern about FACS positions being lost in schools due to budget issues coming from the state department.
If your department is doing well and you are stable please share some of the courses that are taught in your school and what you do to keep your enrollment steady. There are schools out there fighting to keep the few classes that they have and they want some advice. If you have some please share it.
I hope that these hard times are making MAFCS members aware of how important our organization is and how important it is for us to support one another as FACS professionals in good times and bad. Jane H.

MAFCS Highlights
From the MAFCS President:
Exciting things are happening in MAFCS.
Thank you to Jane for setting up this blog!
Centennial Celebration....
Plan now to attend the MAFCS Centennial Conference April 2-4, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza in Brooklyn Park, MN.
We will be celebrating 100 years of Family and Consumer Sciences. Join us as we honor our past and look to the future of MAFCS.
Members have contacted board and council members with concerns about FACS and Standards, licensing, and program cuts. It would be great to start a conversation through the blog so all members can see the discussion. Invite your colleagues to join in.
Some schools have had success in implementing a fine arts standard in interior design. You can contact your MAFCS Board and council members to learn more. Or... blog your successes and comments here. (Please practice professional courtesy as you do so.)
We are accepting nominations for President Elect, VP of Program Elect, VP of Membership Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, VP of Outreach Elect and Nominations committee. If you are interesting in serving on the MAFCS Board or council, contact Cherry Cramer at bcncrmr3@comcast.net
Wishing you all a Happy Holidays from The MAFCS President: Cherry Cramer

National Conference in Milwaukee, June 2008
The conference in Milwaukee was a great success and we all received good information on current technology and information for the future.
I personally went to several workshops on standards and career clusters that was helpful for my education committee work.
All of the speakers that spoke to the large group were full of interesting information that we can all use in our lives and our careers.
Jean Knack was installed as the new national treasurer. Donna Butterfield did a great job representing Minnesota in the TOY awards. It was great to see Melanie Nelson get her award for business.
The sales table did very well. We sold every navy blue t-shirt that we had and took some orders to send out t-shirts. We still have black t's, spoons and aprons that you can order from us. If you would like any information on the products please contact Cherry Cramer or Jane Hinrichsen. Thanks to all of those that helped with the product sales.
We are hoping to sell product at the district K meeting and at the Stout conference if the table price isn't too high.
